Industrial Revolution Essay
The Industrial Revolution forever changed how people lived and worked in Britain and in the rest of the world. All classes of people – rich and poor – felt the impact of this revolution, though arguably working class people felt the impact the most. Their lives were both improved and negatively impacted by the Industrial Revolution. Overall, do you think the Industrial Revolution impacted working-class people positively or negatively? Use specific examples from your textbook (chapters 3 and 5) and from the notes you take on the in-class readings.
Preparation and Prewriting
Reading: Read all of chapters 3 and 5 in your history textbook (90-107 and 140-161). Obviously, not all of the contents in these chapters will be relevant to the essay topic, so just look for details that deal with the essay topic.
Note taking: Note take by creating a T-chart where you list both the positive impacts and the negative impacts of the Industrial Revolution on the working class. Reference notes with page numbers.
Categorizing: After you have listed all the positives and negatives that you can from your textbook and the class notes on the readings we do, categorize the items by common theme or idea. For example, “better opportunities” might emerge as a theme on the positive side; “difficult working conditions” might emerge as a theme on the negative side. These categories will become your topics for arguing why the IR was more of a benefit or a hardship to the working class.
Intro: This is an essay of argumentation. Your thesis will answer the question Overall, do you think the Industrial Revolution impacted working-class people positively or negatively? After your thesis you need an argument sentence wherein you tell in what two ways (taken from your categorizing activity) the IR impacted working-class people either negatively or positively.
Development of body paragraphs: Begin with a topic sentence. Then give a general comment on how the IR either negatively or positively impacted the working class in terms of the category you are describing. Provide specific examples from the textbook and from your readings to show why this is true. Stronger papers will raise counterarguments in these body paragraphs and show why these counterarguments are incorrect.
